Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne

Refurbishment of the audio system in the picture room (radio play, background noise, microphonics)

The Bourbaki Panorama is a European cultural monument of the first order and commemorates the internment of 87,000 French soldiers who found refuge in Switzerland in the winter of 1871. The large circular image is also a symbol of Switzerland's humanitarian tradition. As a museum, the Bourbaki Panorama forms a cultural focal point in the listed building. It is also a sought-after event location.
The soundscape is a central element of the panorama presentation and forms a unity with the circular image, visual and structural measures (spiral staircase, canopy) and the faux-terrain. There are around 36 sound tracks with different sounds, cleverly placed in the faux-terrain and behind the circular image. The sensual overall experience with "visual and auditory wonder" is essential to immerse oneself in the scenery and let oneself be taken in by the events. In addition, the 12-minute radio play has an important mediating function. During the restoration of the panorama, it was decided not to disturb the visual experience in the picture space with explanatory panels and to rely on storytelling as a means of communication.
A refurbishment of the 20-year-old radio play system had been on the cards for some time. auviso was allowed to present a concept and offer for the complete renewal of the playback system in autumn 2019. On behalf of the Bourbaki Panorama Luzern Foundation, the time during the museum closure due to the lockdown in Switzerland could be used to implement the project a little earlier than planned.

Technical

A total of 37 speakers are artistically installed in the 360° panorama. The presentation can be operated via a touch panel at the museum reception, depending on the language of the guests, as well as on an iPad. In addition, three radio microphones are installed for announcements, announcements and guided tours. At the heart of the radio play system is an audio server that distributes 32 audio channels to the appropriate loudspeakers. At events, such as the annual Fumetto and projects of the Lucerne School of Art and Design, the entire system (sound and radio play system, radio microphones, eight-fold panorama projection) can also be switched and operated in-house via an iPad.
